Not many of us will get the chance to take a fantastic hobby and turn it into anything more than that.  Sure, we may sell a few gourd birdhouses or gourd lamps at a market – but replacing a full time income, and taking that required leap of faith – well that is something altogether different.

That is what makes Vainius Kubilius so inspiring.  Vainius has turned his mastery with gourd lamps into a success story that we cam all aspire too.  The story of Kubilius begins with a coconut.  Starting his career by using coconuts as his canvas to make lights, he has since revamped and expanded his art form to include gourds.  Not surprisingly the results are simply spectacular, and quite literally admired and sought out world wide.  When you add one of these lamps to your living space, you are not just adding a lamp per se’ you are adding a light show to your house.  A Kubillus puts it: “Whatever expensive, gorgeous furniture or decorations the home has, when it comes night it won’t matter.  The thing that accentuate the rooms look and add sense of belonging is Light.”

Featured in My Modern Net, Kubilius highlights the fact that he has delivered over 2,000 pieces of his unique craft to a worldwide audience.  His standalone hobby, turned living, has brought him to a point where he has hired a team to expand his businesses ventures.

Discovering that the gourds can deliver a more predictable shape as well as easier to find workable pieces, gourds have become a key part of his new business model.  One of the main benefits of working with gourds, is that they are larger in shape, which as you can imagine, gives the artist much more room to work with – and the results are absolutely stunning.

Another benefit of using gourds, and one we didn’t elude to in our own article, is that by engraving only a portion of the surface on the gourd, you can produce a stunning red shading effect on the gourd.  It is almost like you’ve included another light source within the gourd itself.

Kubilius credits a lot of his success to Poland based gourd artist – Calabarte.  Calabarte has shared 8 years worth of experience - which has help flatten the learning curve we all experience when working with gourds.  “Without him, this collection would not be as high quality as it is now.”

Kubilus has continued to expand his business, and has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund his art.  Given the quality of his art, it is no surprise he has already passed his goal.  Currently his project has over 250 backers, and you can still act now and be able to receive a piece of his artwork.  His lamps will be in a variety of shapes and sized, and shipped worldwide.

You can see several sample of Kubilus’s work on the Kickstarter page as well as his own website.  In addition you can view his mentor’s work Przemek Krawczynski a.k.a. Calabarte at https://www.calabarte.com/

His lamps have world wide appeal as illustrated by his “Light the World” map hosted on Google.
